Warning About The Dangers of Swimming in Quarries

Warwickshire Police have joined with Warwickshire Fire and Rescue to warn people about the dangers of swimming in quarries. The warning comes after a 17-year-old boy died after going into a quarry in Bishops Itchington.

Quarries are vey dangerous places. While they may look safe and inviting in the hot weather there are hidden dangers:

-The water can be deeper than it looks.
-The water can be cold, even on a hot day, and this can lead to cold water shock which can have sever affects on your body within three minutes.
-There can be debris lying just below the surface.
-There can be hidden currents.
-Steep ledges can make it hard to get out if you get into difficulties.
-Added to this there can be dead animals, excrement, rubbish, pollution, and dangerous algae, all of which can make you ill.

Despite the recent death and warnings to the public about the dangers, we still responded to two reports of people swimming in the quarry at Bishops Itchington at the weekend.
